PostSubject: FoxFire (the Game)   Fri Jun 20, 2008 6:57 pm

Well, Sparky and (mostly) I have been working on a project, called FoxFire. It's very far from being done, and activity around here has been below "living forum," so any interest shown in it would be appreciated.

I need NPCs, ideas, etc. So, feel free to go nuts. It is in 7.0 and, not currently but could become, pro. Of course, help is appreciated and will go into the credits.

So little of it is done, I think explaining it will be better than posting a link to download. Gee that was a bright idea. Here you go v0.0.1: link to download

Info:
You play as Sage J. Fox, an anthropomorphic fox in the year 2075. You are friends and partnered with Sam "Subcon" Grey, an anthro avian rodent (rat-bird). There is Bandit Waschbär, a thieving raccoon anthro who, although seeming to be your rival, helps you on occasion. There is a mysterious figure, known only as the Dark Master, who threatens the world. You must (eventually) stop him.

Controls:
Arrow Keys/Left Analog stick- move
Space/Button 2- open chests/doors, talk, etc.
C/Button 1- cut down bushes

Views: 3/4ths view, grid-based, 16*16, follows player
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy RPG (Yes, RPG. It can be done.)
Game Maker Logo 7.0

*Link updated to version 0.0.1. The main additions to this version are bushes can be cut down, there is a (albeit small) help file, music, and gamepad (controller) compatibility, as well as (unnoticeable) improvements to movement and object interaction code, mainly putting less code in the step/key press events.
*Yes, I've noticed the occasional problem where you "get caught" in a bush after it's been cut down. I've already fixed it (but haven't updated the link).

Current Controls and the link to download the "game" so far put into the first post. Not much, but it at least shows you what to expect graphics wise.

However, I have a dilemma. What kind of battle system should I have? I've narrowed it to two choices: real-time battling (Like the Legend of Zelda, Spyro the Dragon, etc.) or turn-based "different room" battling (Like Pokémon, Xenosaga, etc.). So, which do you guys think?

It all depends on the mood you want, real time is more stressful and usually requires good timing and reflexes. turn based is more laid back and strategy based.

i personally like the first better

Actually, I had a third option, I liked it but it would be a lot of work. The normal fights would be turn based and bosses real time. I guess if you all like that then I'd put it in. Well, maybe not that much work...

That might be a good idea, that way everybody gets what they want. and there's lots of variation in gameplay.

EDIT: you could also make it an option for the player, to choose the way (s)he would like it.

I would like it to be turn based, but not in a battle scene kinda thing....an example of what i would want is like the battle system in pokemon mystery dungeon....

No. That would mess up the current walking system, and I can already see the problems should I try to put it in. Good suggestion though. ~Sage

Strange, i couldn't do anything in the demo. the arrow keys didn't work, the only button that actually did something was "D"

I find this game pretty cool....just want more and wish i didn't start inside a house...

Pretty much all i found wrong was
1. That i had to download twice.
2. I didn't actually read and just played and couldn't figure out how to get out of the house...
3. cutting trees to fast gets you stuck
4. move and press D then get out will make you move without pressing anything...
5. the potion thing is kinda useless at the moment....

Most of this is old but whatever.

I've developed more of the plot. The only thing I'm wiling to release right now, however, is the main enemy.

United Dark Enterprise (UDE)

Responsible for our hero's turmoil. What is said turmoil? Well, only most of the enemies, and a large chunk of the 'dungeons.'

Fear the UDE.

PostSubject: Re: FoxFire (the Game)   Mon Sep 08, 2008 11:40 pm

Sorry for the death of this topic, but I was stuck on a problem. How would I get nice, simple, efficient (or at least unbuggy) room transitions?

I was working on a solution with no luck for about three weeks. Then it hit me:

Set up a 2 dimensional while-loop array containing the max 'x' and 'y' of any given room. In the Create Start event of the room controller object, set the 'x' and 'y' for each room (Any 'coordinate' not used is set to false). When a outside room event takes place, move through this pseudo-grid of rooms in the correct direction. Any unused ways would be blocked off anyway, so that's not an issue. The only problem is different sized rooms. This can be worked around, however. 'Dungeons' would also get their own set of 'coordinates.'
With this, however, I'm going to have to plan out the whole world first. This is going to take time. Sorry.

I'll make an example to put on the site if you're confused or would need this later.

Anyway, this basically just means that the game isn't dead, it's just going through a major update.
